Get the season’s 5 trendy lip colors and looks on a budget

Changing your lip color is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to transform your style for fall. To help you (and me) stay on trend, I checked in with beauty influencer Laura Catron for some insight on what’s hot on lips this season — and how to get the best look on the cheap.

The bottom line is, this autumn is the season of speech. We’re talking rich pigments, all-day color, and otherworldly glosses and glosses. You can wear brown or red colors, but bolder.

Catron’s quote of the day on Fall Lips is:

One of my favorite things about fall is how those maroon, red and crimson tones of the environment come alive with makeup and style. Let your lips be the main attraction this fall. A gorgeous bold lip can take you from tired to elegant in one fell swoop.

Hear hear! You heard it ladies — this season, let your lips do the talking, style-wise. Read on for five ways to do this using cost-efficient drugstore products from Walgreens.

1. Vinyl lip

You’ve seen them in your feed, no doubt. Vinyl lips are heavily pigmented, long wearing and extremely glossy. This is a favorite beauty look among celebrities. After all, those rich, glossy lips hold their own amid the glitz and glam of the red carpet.

You have your options for vinyl-look lip colors and at different price points. But as bold as vinyl lips look, it’s always better to start with budget brands. That way, you won’t spend two months of your beauty budget on a product you won’t use.

Catron’s pick for budget vinyl lips is Revlon ColorStay Satin Ink. It is available in 19 delicious shades from mauve to fiery orange. The price I am writing is $12.39. Check today’s prices at Walgreens here.

I tried the Revln ColorStay Satin Ink

You can keep up with this trend without being over the top! I tried the Revlon ColorStay Satin Ink in Partner in Crime. I lined with NYX Matte Lip Liner in Stockholm and topped it off with NYX Butter Gloss. It’s a wearable interpretation of vinyl lips that last all day.

2. Brownie glossy lips

Hailey Beiber recently wowed TikTokkers with her “Brownie Glazed Lips” – a warm, glossy, highly dimensional application.

Most don’t have Bieber’s full lips and amazing bone structure, but that’s okay! You can rock this trendy lip look with two budget-branded products on hand. Catron recommends:

  1. NYX Professional Slim Lip Pencil in Espresso. It’s about $5, but you can check the current price at Walgreens here.
  2. NYX Butter Gloss for a high-shine finish, also a $5 product. Check out NYX Butter Gloss at Walgreens.com here.

3. Classic red lips

If you’ve been itching to get out of the mauve rut and start working on your own red lip style, fall is the time to do it.

There are two common challenges you may face with red lip color. One, it’s easy to pick the wrong shade. And two, your dark red lips can transfer color all over the place—from redness on your lip lines to red stains on napkins and glasses. Here are Catron’s tips for a great red lip experience:

  1. If you have fair skin, reach for a cool, blue-cherry red. Otherwise, your medium or tan skin will look incredible with a warm, orange-red.
  2. Apply lip liner after Your lipstick is mind blowing, isn’t it?

Catron likes Maybelline Superstay Ink Crayons for long-wearing, non-drying color. You can pick one up at Walgreens for $10.99. Check out the price and color selection here.

Two pictures of Catherine Brock wearing a trendy lip color before and after eating.

The photos above show my attempt at red lips “the right way.” Top image right after application. I used Maybelline Super Stay Ink Crayon in Own Your Empire, then lined the ears with NYX Matter Liner. The liner is a bit softer, so it took some of the edge off the red, which was perfect.

The photo below is of me after eating a (large) salad. The lighting is a little different from one pic to the next, but My lips were still red and shiny after eating – And a salad, no less! Sure, I lost a bit of pigment and gloss but I’m happy with the staying power of this lip color and liner combo.

4. Dark brown lips

To choose a brown lip color that will be flattering, focus on the undertones. Catron recommends:

  • Orange undertones look warm and cozy against fair skin.
  • Gray, dusty brown colors are a good match for medium skin.
  • Peachy brown and rich chocolate flatter tanner skin tones.

5. Everyday Brown Pouty

If you’re not ready for your lips to be the center of attention, try this subtle style from Catron that’s still on trend. Line your lips with a brown liner, lightly shading the outer corner. Then use a small, flat brush to blend the lines. Top with a shimmery gold gloss like the Maybelline Lifter Gloss in Crystal.

You can check the availability of Maybelline Lifter Gloss here at Walgreens.
